Carbon Mass Concentrations in the Air at the Plitvice Lakes National Park

I. Šimić, R. Godec, I. Bešlić and S. Davila

Abstract

Monitoring the level of PM2.5 mass concentration and determining their chemical composition is of great importance given that numerous studies have shown a connection between this particle fraction and harmful effects on human health and the environment. The 24-hour PM2.5 samples were collected on quartz fibre filters throughout 2015 at a sampling site located within the Plitvice Lakes National Park. Mass concentrations of PM2.5 were determined gravimetrically, while carbon contents were measured using thermal-optical transmission method. The highest mass concentrations of PM2.5, organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) were observed in summer, while the lowest were detected in winter.
