Abstract

This paper contains a concise presentation of available basic technoeconomic, environmental and other facts important for the projects of INA-INDUSTRIJA NAFTE d.d. (hereinafter Ina) in the function of the company sustainable development and society as a whole. The Enclosure lists the projects for which the investment activities started during the period from 2000 to 2002, per Ina's segments of activities: oil and gas exploration, oil and gas refinery procesing, production of lubricants, as well as retail sale and distribution of fuels with the appurtenant asortment. In the atmosphere of presures in which the golobal energy supply, i.e. oil and gas industry are created, with a series of measures Ina is trying to respond to the needs of society in which it operates, and to the requirements of future generations, thus making efforts with the objective of becoming a succesful company, which will promote development of the sustainable oil and gas production in such a way that it simultaneously improves environmental protection (schematically shown in Figure 1). From the total number of analyzed projects 30 % is primarily in the function of environmental protection (ecological projects No.1-17, mentioned in the Enclosure, financed from the loan of European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, hereinafter EBRD), 16 % regards the commenced activities of investing in the projects of Cleaner Production as a preventive strategy of environmental protection (projects No.48-56). Implementation of these projects will reflect on the busines eco- efficiency in the production and procesing of Ina. The remaining 54 % of projects is primarily connected with the company economic benefits (increased yield of energy sources, improved quality of products and services, as well as the decrease of total costs and achieving the European busines level/benchmark). At the same time, in addition to meeting the requirements of occupational safety, of the workers in production and product users, there will be achieved also ecological improvements within the scope of activities mentioned above. Shares of project interventions in protection of the eco-system parts are schematically shown in Figure 2. According to the author's estimates, 12-20 % of the total investments in projects has been provided for environmental protection. The analyzed effects of projects implementation, intended for creating the competitive advantages on the market of energy sources, their products and services, represent an indicator of Ina's choosing the way of eco-efficiency in all its activity segments (reduced quantities of energy and material, which includes reduction of pollutants emisions in the environment, so as to reduce costs of product or service units), and cleaner production (as a preventive strategy of environmental protection) according to the principles of sustainable development. This way, in the atmosphere of new economic, technological-technical and market, ecological and social changes, Ina has chosen a continuous investing in modernization/restructuring of the existing, and construction of the new, cleaner, more efficient production systems, proceses/technologies, products of better quality (to be more profitable and leading to saving, also due to the reduced waste materials and energy consumption, which decreases emisions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants into the environment), improvement of operating measures, achievement of a high level of occupational safety (reduction of accident risks: leaks/spills, explosions, fires), meeting the requirements of legal regulations, international standards, selection of the most favourable market options/requirements, development of the best posible quality of information infrastructure for the purpose of achieving the competitive costs in all the segments of busines activity and fulfilling the needs of present and future generations for energy sources, their products and services.
