Is “Strohal’s nomenclature” really Strohal’s?

V. Stilinović and T. Portada

Abstract

Anionic nomenclature of acids, better known as Strohal’s nomenclature, is a noteworthy phenomenon in the history of Croatian chemical nomenclature. After a short historical overview, facts which support conclusion that D. Strohal was not it’s original author are presented. The anionic nomenclature of acids was, in it’s German version, conceived by W. Ostwald and addapted to Croatian language by G. Fleischer thirty years before Strohal’s proposition. Thus, it is most likely that Strohal had been under influence of their ideas.
