70th Anniversary of the First Synthesis of Adamantane

Abstract

As part of the celebration of the International Year of Chemistry – 2011, the 70th anniversary of the first adamantane synthesis was marked in Zagreb. This article addresses the retrospect of the synthesis of adamantane by Prelog, as well as presents a review of the research in adamantane chemistry in Zagreb from 1971 to the present day. Some research results of the application of the adamantane molecule in other systems were also described, e.g. adamantane crown ethers, dipyrromethanes and bisureas, as well as photochemistry of adamantylphthalimides and photochemical preparation of adamantane quinone methides.
